Writing a CV
It is easy to get right as long as you follow some simple guidelines. The right CV can be the key to unlock the door to your success and is of course the first impression that you give to any potential employer.
The Guidelines
Keep it short and simple
Most peoples CV should be no longer than two sides of A4 paper once typed.
Get the order right
CV Heading
Personal Details
You should include your Date of Birth, a contact number that you can receive calls on, a current email address, your marital status and whether you can drive and have use of a car. It is important to include your right to work within the United Kingdom.
Profile
This should be a summary of the key selling points of your CV, so the recipient could get an indication about you without going into the rest of the CV.
Career History
Start with your current employer and work backwards. Include relevant information specific to the job that you have applied for. Qualify examples with achievements. For every position held, summarise the key facts and figures below each employment entry - include details about turnover, average order values, conversion rates, square footage and the number of units for which you were directly accountable, as applicable. This is critical information and helps an employer or recruiter to correctly assess your level of experience. Do give salary details but beware not to exaggerate as this may scare off some potential employers who may have been interested.
Qualifications, Training & Education
Do not include your Primary Education as most employers are not too interested in your GCSE or equivalent subjects or grades.
References
Do not put down your referees at this stage. Usually references will only be sought if the potential employer looks to make an offer.
Explain any gaps
Reason for leaving and staying
Do not criticize your current employer.
Be Honest
Professional Presentation
Keeping your fonts simple and text size at 10/12. Make sure that it does not look cluttered. The use of good headings or bullet points will help to give the CV structure and make it easier on the eye. Make sure that you proof read thoroughly checking for spelling mistakes and grammatical errors. Using colour can sometimes detract from your message. Do not include a photo unless specifically instructed to do so.
Finally, keep your CV up to date as this will make sure that you are always ready for the perfect position. Any recent achievements will be free in your mind to include.
